PSS reflection

During this assignment, we were looking at how to remove or how to reduce the waste that was created by the vending system. At the present system, all the waste goes to refill. It was very different from just designing a product because we had to understand how the product service system of vending machine, then we have to identify the problem which we find that people are not willing to recycle.

I was satisfied with the group outcome, our concept change a lot from our initial concept, which was a vending machine that has a recycle component to it, which was mainly focus on the recycle component. For our final, it is a refillable vending juicy machine with recycle component. This not only promotes the recycling concept but also a healthy diet for university student.

The advantage of the product service system is that help us to realize what product is related and what problem was there. The disadvantage is that there is a lot of thing other than the product feature that we need to consider, such as if the product fix into the product service system or if the user will willing to use it

If this brief was in studio 2, I would focus more on the form on the product than the actually feature of the product.

The story of cap and trade

“These guys don’t seem to realize that the simplest way to keep carbon out of the atmosphere is to leave it safely in the ground”, as a lot of the research show, the main carbon pollution come of the factory. I strongly suggest carbon fee should be introduced, which the company have to pay for the amount of pollutant produce when manufacture a product. By doing so, it will force the designer or company to find method that creates less carbon dioxide. One of the ways is to use material that uses less energy to be manufacture. Another thing is the waste after consume the product, some of them will go to landfill and other will be burn, which creates a lot of carbon dioxide, we should also think of the end of life of the product, such as recycle or reuse of the component of some of the product. I think law should be implementing to force the company to recycle their own product when the product reaches to their end of life

Another ways to reduce carbon dioxide is to educate people. We can talk people to use less private transport by introduce people that do not require fossil fuse as their main energy source, such as bike. By giving people incentive, such as the benefit of health when riding bike help you to do exercise each day , it cost you less transportation fee, this could remove the barriers that people relay on the private transport.

Design for life

One thing that is mention in the video is that “Design is not driven but the market, design is driven by function”, we don’t need that much product out there. As Philippe Starck said there is a lot of product that don’t deserve to do out there, such as a product (i-pod cover) that is mention in the video. The product already can do its function and its good appearance. There is no need to put again cover on top of it to protect it.
Philippe Starck talked about to “question everything about design as design is a force to change the society”, we as designer should keep question why each product need such material or such manufacture process, also how is the end of life of the product will be, such as can it be recycle or if it can reuse in some way. He also said that “You don’t make good design when you think design. You do make good design when you think life and society”, when ever do designing a product, the designers must understand the need of the society before they design. Designers not only need to design a product that does its function but the product has benefit to the society other than it functions.
Another thing that designer also forget on the in mind is the manufacture process. As mention at the start of a episode when the two product designer take their concept to the manufacturer, they have no idea how the product was to manufacture. The manufacturer also said that nowadays they always receive technical drawing that has no dimension and unclear in detail

My Ecological Footprint

The 11thhour

First, “we are different from the nature, we don’t need to nature” stated in the video show that we as human want power to control everything. As scientist show that we evolute from ape, one thing that we are different to the nature is that we think about the future, such as how to impove our quility of life. We also think we are the top of the food chain, but when we really think about it, we do need the nature and we depend on the nature in order to keep us survive, such as the tree change carbon dioxdie to oxygen.

In the video , it says that “after the industry revolution , nature become resourse” which is very true. We have been keep mass production, By doing so, we cause the global warming effect. Because there is too many of as using too many resourse too fast , the global warming came quicker and worster then a lot of scientist.

Also, it mention that “Under the law, you are either a properties or person, and the nature is properties”. Nowaday, we as human treat the nature as properties, which mean we can sell it, buy it and trade it. Because we want ownership of a certain area of the nature, we are causing fifteen thousand spiece of habbitat extin every year. So the a long term, it only affect us because the food chain relay on everybody, when a spiece is missing from a food chain, it will cause iver number of an other spiece, and because if that the large amount of them competing with a limit of resource, they soon will extin. This theory also work for us as well as we are also a part of the food chain.

Objectified

When you see an object, you will have many assumptions in a few second such as, what did it do? How does it work? How do you use it? How much it cost? How heavy it is? It says in the video that design is a search for form, it is really true because the object say be able to tell its function through their appearance. It can to done by adding different design element to the appearance, such as curve, grip, sign or symbol.

Furthermore, “each object should be able to tell a story”, an example is the toothpick which was original from Japan where the back of the toothpick can be serrate. It has two meaning, one is that the toothpick is already used and the other is that it acts as a rest for the toothpick, which related back to their culture content and ritual.

The video also point out that “the big issues of design are the thing really making affect and making change”. One example is a chair. When you sit on it, you feels that the chair is uncomfortable. The object should meet people need that perform well in function and it special in their lives. If you have a design that is precious that you really love, you will never going to throw that design away. This is important because if the object is uncomfortable or does not suit its properties, then the object would properly end up into landfill, which mean it have a very short life cycle.

The video also tell a interesting method for when we are designing, which is the mind map. It is a map where they go further and further, each factor with relate to another factor as it branch out. At the end, there should be new ground, where object could be made to suit people needs.

Some of the concept

Final Product

Aim

-to have a name tag at the back of the seat so it is more personlized

-the is space under the seat so there could be storage

-sit rest was implemented to give the user more comfit
